Press Release Text
Rolando Anselmi is pleased to announce Ancora su Villa Adriana, Luca Vitone's first solo exhibition at the gallery in Rome. The self-representation of places, as emblems of culture, historical events and morphological features, is pivotal within Luca Vitone's artistic practice. The intention to portray a space on the pictorial canvas is combined with the specific research of the environmental characteristics that constitute the 'places of power'. The series of monochromes, set up on the two floors of the gallery, owes its name to the conceptual self-portrait of the Tiburtine ruins on the canvases that, once exposed to the atmospheric agents of certain spaces of the Villa, not only become lenses for the observation of the place, but also cataloguers of its natural shape. The atmospheric agents thus become witnesses to the private dimension of the Villa, as the Emperor's residence and, at the same time, an allegory of his power. The study of the complex cultural and geographic stratigraphy of the place also unfolds through I Capricci, engravings by Giambattista Piranesi on which Vitone intervenes by tracing musical notes in ink that emerge from the ruins. The movement of the notes testifies to the imperial residence's link with music and becomes a metaphorical image of a cultural memory that comes from the roots of the land.
